^^^^^^^^ Yes, those other things matter, but IOs put a HUGE weight on photos. There have been cases of applications being rejected based on not enough photos!
I think the cards, emails and phone bills strengthen the case, but the photos are proof of your time spent together and really, most people can tell genuine smiles and happiness in a photo. Phone bills don't show that.
I also wanted to mention that candid photos are really important. Check with your family and friends to see if any of them have taken pictures where you and your spouse are in the picture but not posing. The IO will be looking to see if you are standing close, touching, smiling etc. even when you don't think the camera is on you.
Also, I sent photos of us kissing. Wedding and other times. A forum member here had a refusal and one of the reason's was "photos not romantic enough"
I think (haven't finished yet, so this is a guess) that I will be submitting somewhere in the range of 50-70 pictures. We sadly lost a lot of pictures from the early years of our relationship (make sure to back up your digital photos!!), and the pictures that I am sending mostly show us on vacations, and with each other's families.
Does anyone think it will be a problem to have 1/2 loose photos and 1/2 compiled in a document? I have collected copies of pictures of us together from friends and family, but they aren't digital, and I would rather just write the captions on the back, and include the digital photos in a word document, but don't want to get too confusing...my scanner is very old and very slow - it will probably take an entire day to scan 20-25 pictures!

Very well said, bobshynoswife!! I totally agree!! Photos can say a lot about a relationship! To those that replied to this thread, thank you so much for your insights. It'll definitely help us strengthen our case!
I still worry because most of the time we spent together was at 'half way' point visits so it was just the two of us.. so not so many candid photos.. but they have documentation of these visits and they can see the huge Niagara Falls in the background of all of them, so hopefully they take that into consideration!
That's my plan, actually. Right now I have 12 pages with a little over 100 pictures. That's about 5-6 pictures per page. Many people have done the same so it shouldn't be a problem.
If you are submitting a spousal application, it is required as per the checklist that you include proof of your relationship, including photos among other things. It is in your best interest to include as much information as you can, as most spousal applications that are denied are due to the fact that the IO isn't convinced that the relationship is genuine.
Here is the quote from the checklist:
If you are being sponsored by your spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner, you must send evidence of the relationship between you and your sponsor such as wedding photos or proof that you are partners, letters between you and your sponsor, and telephone bills showing contact between you and your sponsor.
