Hi

I am a Canadian permanent resident and have completed my 2 years of residency in Canada. I currently live in India and have no plans to going back to canada fr atleast 6 months. My PR is expiring in July 2012. Can i renew it without visitng Canada ? I read on the CIC website if the date gets closer to your card getting expired, i should let it expire and put my PR card along with all the documents and send it to the PR renewal office. My brother lives in Canada so my plan is to let the PR card expire and ill mail my cousin all the documents along with my expired PR card and the new PR card will be mailed to him which he can mail me to India. Will this work or do i have to visit canada myself and submit all the documents by post ?

(Please dont reply with assumptions. I am looking for crystal clear facts )

Thank you

Fact: You can not renew your PR without visiting Canada.

Fact: PR renewal applications must originate from within Canada. Therefore, it may work to have someone mail your application in for you even if you are not in Canada yourself. However, only the 1st PR card is mailed to you. Renewals you have to pick up yourself at your local CIC office (in the town where your relative lives).

You have two options:

1. Wait to renew your PR card until you are back in Canada to stay. This means you will need a travel document once you are ready to return if your PR card is expired by then. The current processing time is 74 days.

2. Apply now through your relative. You do not have to send your PR card in because it is not expired yet. When your relative gets the letter stating you can pick up the new card, if your old PR card is still valid, just come to pick it up or if it is expired by then, get a travel document to go pick it up.
