It will be diffivult to link without this information .. you can try putting your first name as your last name .. no harm in trying different combination ..
Although you get to try it only 5 times per 24 hours
Linking your application gives you all the available updates on your application ,if his reviews of eligibility has not yet started it’s very likely he won’t get get his biometric acknowledgment ,his only source of information right now about his application is through VFS tracking which is literally irrelevant till the counterfoil is stamped and that is in most case about 3-4 days after your visa has already been approved, his best bet to address his concerns is to keep watch on his application updates and his only way to fo so is to link his applicationonline rather than looking for answers on this forum
As I mentioned to Loveleen .. not able to link is seperate issue and not receiving biometric letter is another.
One can have all the information needed but would still not be able to link their application due to glitch which currently CIC is having.
You need not stress this much. I mentioned a link in my previous reply to loveleen .. refer to that link to get better idea of when you might be receiving bio-metric letter.

You’re likely to receive the biometrics validity letter a day before the decision is made. You’ve to wait.
If you got acknowledgement letter before that, then you’ll be able to link your application with GCkey account as UCI and application number are mentioned on that letter as well.

Some students (not all) receive an acknowledgment letter from IRCC after 15 days or a month which states that your application is complete and has been received.

He needs to link his application online is what i am trying to infer, there isn’t any glitch with CIC whatsoever and one can link the application without any issues as regard to him not having a family name on his travell document is a rare situation and he can try a way around it if that doesn’t work he needs wait till he gets his UCI.

You need to check CIC website before stating there is no glitch with online application. CIC says on their website if you are not able to find your application within 5 days of submission, please report them for technical error.
Why would CIC have this message on main page of login screen if there is no glitch or problem with it.
I can provide with links for several threads on this forum where people are not been able to link their application even after entering all required information. Some are able to link after multiple attempts with trying variations.
