Permenent Residence - Passport of Orgin Expiration

Hi! My husband is able to come to Canada as a permenent resident. However, his passport of orgin expires in the year 2018. Is there a way to renew his passport in Canada or will be have to travel back to his country to renew it?

Where is he from? 99.9% likely he can renew it at the embassy in Canada. I have never heard of a country that doesn't do it like that.
