My passport expires October 2015 (I am the sponsor) and we are hoping to send our application out by March 1st at the latest. Will it affect the application if my passport expires in october of this year? I will be renewing it but our application will already be sent out by then..

no. it won't negatively affect your application. since you are visa exempt, they don't actually need your physical passport. the passport expiry date is part of the reason why they do passport requests at the end of the process. The best thing to do is to send a copy of the updated passport AS SOON AS you receive it. That way, you can avoid delays later on when they request your passport to issue the approval. No matter what, when you get a passport request, all you have to do is send a copy of your new one and there shouldn't be any issue.

The OP is actually the sponsor so I think it is fine and will probably not even need to update CIC later on.

oh oops, i thought the op was referring to the applicant's passport. yeah, the sponsor's passport doesn't matter at all past sponsor eligibility, so there would be no reason to update it with CIC.
