Hi. I currently have a PGWP that is expiring on 11/24. My common law partner is a PR holder and I’d like to continue to work with my employer for at least one year before I move back to my country. Can I apply for an open work permit through my common law partner? Or, are there any other alternatives for me to explore?
Thanks!

To qualify for an open work permit through your partner, your partner must apply to sponsor you for PR first. Approximately 2-3 months after the application is submitted, you will receive AOR and can then apply for an open work permit. So the first step is to have your partner sponsor you for PR through family class.

Thank you! Is there a way to do it outside of PR? It’s a big money commitment for just a one year stay. I’m thinking I’ll go the PR route as my last option.

No. Assume your partner has changed status to common law with IRCC and CRA.

Your employer can get an approved LMIA and then you can switch to a closed work permit.
