My husband currently has an in-Canada PR application in progress (inland spousal sponsorship).
Biometrics, Medical checks, and Eligibility has been completed, and Background verification is in progress.
He is currently in Canada on a multiple-entry visiting visa. He will reach 6 months of stay at the end of July.
He also applied for an Open Work Permit after receiving the AOR for the PR application, and this application is also in progress.
Would he need to apply for a visitor record to have legal status in Canada after July?
Or is having an OWP application in progress enough to have valid status?
Please also let us know if there is anything helpful on the IRCC website related to this type of situation.
He needs to apply for visitor visa extension. Application in progress doesn't give him any status. If he doesn't extend his visitor visa he will be out of status.

An Acknowledgment of Receipt (AOR) is an official document that confirms that Immigration, Refugees, Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has received your application after checking for completion.
You can apply online using Gckey account or paper mail it to them.
The only difference is the processing time

No he does not. You are correct that `Application in progress' does not help, but the OWP application certainly does.
Because the OWP was submitted BEFORE his legal status expired, he now has Maintained Status (previously known as Implied Status). IF the OWP is refused for some reason, he would then need to take action. Inland applicants have been doing this for a very long time (many, many years), so if you have evidence that things have changed please elaborate.
The OP could call IRCC, but reaching a human is difficult; reaching a human (in their call center) that knows the correct answer is even more challenging.
