I aslo want to use AVR but need little clarification if anyone can help.
My I-94 is expired as well my US visa (H1) but I have valid I797 approval notice till 2012. I was reading AVR rule and one of thing/requirement I noticed "Valid I-94". Now you won't get valid/new I94 until you cross the border. Does this means valid status (approved I797) can be used and they will give me new I-94 based on that with the validity of my H1?
Thanks

AVR should work the same way even if its H1, H4 or F1.
I checked the CIC website, and the status shows:
A decision has been made on your application. The office will contact you concerning this decision.
should i receive the passports with visa soon?

I think so.
Mine changed the day they sent out the passport, but I know people whose ecas changed much later, ie after they received the passport and there are those whose ecas changed before they got ppr.
My spouse has changed status from H4 - F1 in US and have an expired visa in passport and valid I-20 and valid F1 i-94 form . Can we use AVR in this case?
If she is currently in F1 status, the expired visa has to be an F1 visa in order for her to use AVR. Otherwise she will have to apply for an F1 visa while in Canada.

This refers to the 1-94 you received that last time you entered the country - hopefully you still have it - you should retain it when you travel to Canada because they will ask for it when you use AVR.
LA mailed my passport back yesterday by overnight mail, so it should be waiting for me when I get home today. It took exactly 5 weeks from the time they received the passports. My family plans to drive to the border at Coutts this weekend to complete our landing.

The bottom portion of I797 is an I-94 with validation date, isn't it?
