On visitor record waiting for PR and OPW - can I re-enter?

I'm an EU citizen, married to a Canadian citizen. We applied for spousal sponsorship and open work permit early march 2020. I've been in the country since December 2019 as a visitor, applied to visitor record in April asking to stay until the end of September. So far we haven't received any update on these. What can I do if my visitor status is about to expire again without making progress on the PR status and the work permit? Can I apply to extension again or will I need to leave the country? Will I be allowed in again if I leave the country for a few weeks?

You have implied status and can stay until a decision is made in your application.

EDIT: By "application" I mean the PR application.
