Hi all,

I recently landed as a PR during the holidays. Currently, I have a valid OHIP health card that is due to expire around mid March, which was the expiration of my open work permit.

The question is, do I need to get my health card updated now that I'm a PR? Or should I just wait until they send me a notice about the upcoming expiration before I renew it?

Just wondering because it seems to me that the coverage is the same regardless if I'm a PR or temporary worker so is there a need to update it right now since it is bound to expire in a few months?

i think you may need to get it covered as a PR. the last thing you want to happen is for it to cancel out because its connected to a work permit that expires in March. i'm not sure that it happens that way, though service ontario isn't going to get notification of your new status until you tell them, so logic states your OHIP is set to end when your work permit does. it may be worth the trip to service ontario to be sure they know you are now PR, and for them to copy your COPR paperwork so you don't run into an issue with coverage in march.
