New TO Canada - Advice on Car.

When I look at them; I hate them.

In Canada, I think an AWD SUV/CUV is a ride everyone needs, especially if a winter like this one continues. But they are bad on MPG.

Why AWD? We have a 2WD Escape Hybrid that's functioned perfectly fine through brutal winters in both Toronto and Calgary.

Get a good set of all-season or winter tires and the drivetrain is irrelevant for the vast majority of people.

Anyways, insurance cost in Alberta is significantly less than Ontario, especially the GTA. My wife being 24 isn't a burden in the faintest in Alberta compared to Ontario. We pay $175 a month versus $450 in Ontario. It isn't even close. And I would advise, depending on what neighborhood you live in (some places, even within the same city, melt snow/ice much faster, others accumulate it and keep it all winter), you may want to consider a larger vehicle like a SUV, Van, or Truck. Our next vehicle is likely a V8 crew cab truck (i.e. Ford F-150 Supercab or Toyota Tundra extended cab).

What are your thoughts about Dodge Caliber or Chrysler PT Cruiser.

Hi guys, I have also started looking for options and I liked Dodge Avenger.
Any views on this car in terms of maintenance and durability ? I am looking to buy 2011 or later model and planning to go for finance.
Any inputs on how can I get a good deal from dealers ?

THat's true... AWD looks like a must now since i have some knowledge about the place... Thanks on the advice... shall look for other alternates..

I personally drive an Infiniti G35 Sports Coupe (RWD) and a Ford Edge (AWD). I had a RWD BMW 320i before. But the driving the G in winter is horrible. Hence, my latest one had to be an SUV with AWD. You either go for an AWD or FWD; but never go for a RWD if you don't need something just for summer/spring.

Some SUV/CUV for suggestion:
Ford Escape/Edge
Chevrolet Equinox/Traverse
Toyota RAV4
Honda CR-V
Mazda CX-5/CX-9
Subaru Forester
Nissan Rouge/Murano
Kia Sportage/Sorento
Hyundai Tucson/Santa Fe

All of the above are in similar price range. Also, a sedan like Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima or any Subaru will be good throughout the year. You can live with all-season tires on an SUV; but you will need some good snow/winter tires for a sedan.
