The government announced that as of January 1, 2024, a single applicant will need to show they have $20,635, representing 75% of LICO, in addition to their first year of tuition and travel costs. This change will apply to new study permit applications received on or after January 1, 2024. Also to note:

• Policy for PGWP extensions is not being extended.
• The waiver on the 20-hour-per-week limit on the number of hours international students are allowed to work off campus while class is in session will be extended to April 30, 2024. International students already in Canada, as well as applicants who have already submitted an application for a study permit as of December 7, 2023, will be able to work off campus more than 20 hours per week until that time. We continue to examine options for this policy in the future, such as expanding off-campus work hours for international students to 30 hours per week while class is in session.
• The facilitative measure that has allowed international students to count time spent studying online towards the length of a future post-graduation work permit, as long as it constitutes less than 50% of the program of study, will continue to be in place for students who begin a study program before September 1, 2024.

Further in the article they are also mentioning to put a cap on the student visas.

Yes they are planning on putting a cap on visas if schools cannot guarantee housing for each student. There is no housing here so if schools cannot house students then no visa. Not sure how schools will do this because there are no new builds. This will also impact private schools in strip malls/office buildings who offer no housing.

If they are going to start capping student visas in general and start supporting under represented areas, then that will affect caps on countries with the largest number of international students. It is all in the wording.

Step in the right direction. I hope that these measures, along with policies already announced, do something to stem the tide of fake students. It is also beneficial to the genuine students in ensuring they have a more realistic amount of funds to support themselves when they arrive in Canada.

It will be more yes, $20k is just for a single applicant so would assume it is more than $4k per person. I

Less than 5% in Canada are not "fake" students. Diploma mills issue 95% of all visas right now. The whole program was designed to make more money out of hopefuls. And don't fall for the "right step" narrative, if it weren't for the taking positions in the polls, Liberals wouldn't have done anything. It isn't like they didn't knew something was wrong from years and years, they kept quiet as long as people were quiet.

70-80hrs/week is about 10-11.4hrs/day in a 7-day week (10-16hrs/day if working only 5 days a week). How would the "student" study then? Assuming we're talking about legit students here...

So, what about students who still passed their courses while working 70-80 hours per week, is it ok? because they studied and worked plus gained success through semester.
