New passport after legal name change?

My wife had a name change before marriage and this was updated in her passport under a page titled "Alterations and Observations". I uploaded this as well as other proofs regarding the legal name change (affidavit, translation) when submitting the application.

However, I just received an email from CIC stating that the old name will be used for further processing, unless I submit a new passport with the new name. They acknowledged the presence of the other proofs.

Do I really need a new passport here? Or is there a chance that they missed the page in the passport that documents the name change? Anyone with similar experience?

I ended up opening a case specific enquiry, and pointed out the page number in the existing passport that mentions the name change.

However, I'm not sure if they will respond soon enough.

Can someone help, please? I'm currently abroad and travelling back to my home country for an urgent passport renewal would incur a lot of expense.
