I'm a Canadian citizen living in Canada about to sponsor my Japanese wife who is living in Japan. I lived and worked in Japan from May 2006 to September 2009, so I how do I get an Option C printout for the current tax year?
I filed my last taxes in Canada April 2006 before I left for Japan and didn't file any taxes in Canada during the 3 years I was away. I was planning on filing starting from this year on, and if they ask me, I have all proof of employment, residence and taxes paid in Japan for those 3 years. Can I get an Option C for the last year I was in Canada (2006) and write them a note explaining?
If I understand correctly, they want to see the Option C to show I'm not on social assistance, not to see my income. As I'm only sponsoring my wife who has no dependants, there is no minimum income for me to meet. I'm back in college living on savings with no job and no income at the moment.
This is the gist of what I'm going to write, any advice/comments would be appreciated:
- I returned to Canada in Sept. '09
- I didn't file Canadian taxes from May '06 - Sept. '09 because I was living and working full time in Japan
- I'm currently a college student in a co-op program in Ontario
- I expect to have a job through my co-op program (minimum 4 months, possibly longer) starting
May 2010
- I will be filing my '09 taxes in April 2010
- I expect to have a full time job by the time my wife's PR is accepted and she comes to Canada
(hopefully around November 2010)
- When my wife comes to Canada, she will be bringing the bulk of my savings in Japanese yen which I left
with her
- I have never filed for bankruptcy
- I am not and have never received any social assistance from Canadian government
Should this be enough? Should I provide bank statements - like I said, most of my savings are in Japan with my wife, and I could only show them the Canadian bank statements with the couple thousand dollars I'm surviving on until I get a job (hopefully) in May 2010. Has anyone submitted an application with this letter in lieu of the Option C and had success?
I have no T4 for 2009 as I was working in Japan for the first half, and attending college in Canada for the second half. Should I get my Japanese paystubs and income tax translated?
