Anyone have any experience with changing legal name for a passport? I went to passport office today and they said that only way for me to get the name I want on the passport is to do legal name change and then send change of name certificate to Sydney and wait 6 months to get new citizenship certificate prior to applying to new passport? Did anyone go through something like this? Cheers

I spoke with the Service Canada once, they have explained that for the passport you need certificate of the legal name change, updated driver's license (or any other proof of identity), and citizenship certificate on the old name (there is no need to change the name there.)
However, I've asked this out of curiosity and haven't start the process yet (waiting for my Oath), so I can not tell for sure if they will change their mind, when it gets to the actual process.
Yes, I went through that process.
First you need to do a legal name change. Then update your DL, health card, SIN card, etc.
Using the legal name change document, apply for a new citizenship certificate and then get a passport.
The entire process took about 5 months for me

Thanks gjp- how long did it take to get the new citizenship certificate from the moment you sent the application about 4 months?
Also, aside from DL, health card, SIN and credit/debit cards is there anything else you updated? What about things like your name in contracts you signed (for home ownership etc)? Cheers appreciate your help.

I am planning on doing that, I heard through my friend who now works for Passport Canada, he said you can apply for Passport with old Citizenship certificate but you would need to update your new name through Vital Stats Canada and once you have proof from Vitals then get at least one more Govt issued ID with new name & then apply for a passport.
