There is no reason to delay applying for a SIN, just do it next time you are in Canada. There's no automatic requirement to start filing taxes because you have one, etc. So just get it out of the way at your convenience.

Do I need a local (i.e., in Canada) address to apply for a SIN? I used a friend's address in Canada to received the (physical) PR card. Not sure if I could continue to claim that I "live" there.

I don't believe so and there's no requirement to live in Canada to have a sin. Being a pr is sufficient. You could certainly use a friend's address if you had to.
