Hey, Im in need of some major advice. I am married to an US citizen and we are trying to determine whether its best for him to move here or me to move there. The major concern is work, we do own our own business but he needs to have a regular job to cover debts while we build up our business (which is online so it doesn't play much of a location factor). If he were to move here how would we go about it and approx. how long would it take for him to legally be able to work?
If you are going to sponsor him for PR using the outland process, he won't qualify to work in Canada until he has become a PR.
If you are going to sponsor him for PR using the inland process, then he will qualify for an open work permit once your application has first stage approval. Right now that's taking around 10 months from the time the application is submitted.
If he wants to work sooner, then he will have to find an employer in Canada who is willing to offer him a job and then apply for a work permit. The employer may also need to obtain a Labour Market Opinion before he can apply for a work permit (depends if the job qualifies under NAFTA or not). If an LMO is needed, it makes the process much more difficult and more expensive since the employer will have to prove that a Canadian could not be found for the role.

scyalla as mentioned above is correct. However if you do take the inland approach, your husband would have to quit his job in US and move to Canada and stay with you. He cannot work while staying with you and must remain in Canada until PR is complete. He can qualify to apply for Open work permit in Canada once he gets Approved in Prinicple status. Open work permit are usually granted same time as AIP if OWP application is submitted with inland sponsorship same time. Keep that in mind when considering inland sponsorship. He cannot even go back to US to work as one of the requirements of inland sponsorship is that he remains in Canada living with you.
