I just got married in Ontario (Canada) and I know it takes around 6-8 weeks before you can get your marriage certificate. Can I go ahead and order the certificate online ASAP or should I wait the 6-8 weeks before ordering?
When I was married they impressed upon me the idea over and over again that if you apply before they get your marriage into the system they will just ignore the request. Honestly, I don't think it's going to take 6-8 weeks for them to put you in the system. Your civil officer or religious overseer should have immediately sent the marriage record to be put in the system after your marriage. I'd give it a couple days to reach the place by mail and then apply.
I applied online the Monday after I got married - when you do that there is a box you can check that says "immigration". So they know that you need the copy for immigration purposes. Ours took 8 weeks, and that included the Christmas break, so it probably would have been faster. Just apply immediately and its in their system right away even though it says it takes 10-12 weeks or whatever it is to get it. It does go faster than they say.
On the recommendation of our marriage officiant we gave him a letter which he submitted to the Registrar General for "Proof of Urgency" for the marriage certificate. We basically wrote a letter stating why we needed it expedited (we wanted to start the sponsorship process asap) and provided proof: our wedding invite and the visa that my husband was in Canada on with the expiry date highlighted.
We ordered our marriage certificate on the day of our ceremony as per the officiants recommendation. We included the order number we recieved in our letter for expediting the certificate. We were married April 2nd and got our certificate 10 days later!!
