Oh I thought you have already paid the fee at the beginning... It's the new thing Ottawa is a processing center since they closed buffalo. They will do all the work and LA will issue the Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) An american citizen is visa exempt and therefore will only have to sent photocopies of the passport (or follow the directions) in the PPR. If you click on the in process when you check you application status online it will tell you that they started processing your application on this day...
It was one of the fees I was unaware of, so I didn't pay it until yesterday. Another $490 into the coffers of the government...it's been a pricey process to say the least. And, yes, they started processing on August 21st - nearly 6 months. I thought that was quite long for a case like ours (US spouse no dependents), but c'est la vie.
Oh, and just to clarify, the next request I can expect is the copy of the passport pages, and then after that we should receive our COPR? Is that correct - just two more steps?

Correct...we call it PPR ( Passport request) and then COPR will be sent to you and then you land with your B4 and B4A and VOILA!!
I was approved on May 30th for sponsorship and had to wait until August 21st for them to start processing our file. So, based on my experience alone, you're probably looking at another two months before Step 2 really begins.
Do they send the COPR to the home address of my US spouse? Like, is it a physical letter that you have to show the IO upon landing? Also, what is the B4 and B4A?

They send it to the return address that you have put on the Postal Envelope. B4 is the goods you bring in when you land B4A is goods to follow ( there is a whole thread on this)
