Mailed application - how do you have an online account to view progress

Hello,
I recently just sent off my complete package for Outland common-law sponsorship. I filled in all the forms, collected doctors, paid fees etc. but I was wondering how people have an online account they get updates when it is sent by mail?
Was I supposed to create an account of some sort?
Any help would be appreciated

No need to create an account. CIC will e-mail or mail you a letter which will have your uci # and file #. You can log in from the CIC website once you have either one of the #s they give you with your name and date of birth. Usually takes 2 weeks to get letter.

I sent my application on 14th December and still haven't heard anything. Is this unusual?

Sponsorship approval takes about a month. Considering the shortened staff with all the recent holidays (XMAS, New Year, etc), I can see things slowed down a bit for the end of Dec.
