Hello!

My husband (citizen of Alberta) is going to begin filing the application to sponsor me (US citizen) come the first week of September, but we were just looking for a little extra clarification in regards to fees.

Obviously for his portion (Sponsor) the processing fee is $75

But for my portion, we are not quite sure under which category I fall

Principal applicant ($475)

Principal applicant under 22 years of age and a dependent child of the sponsor, a child to be adopted or an orphaned family member that is neither married nor in a common-law relationship. ($75)

Family member 22 years or older, or who is married, engaged or in a common-law relationship, regardless of age ($550)

Family member who is under 22 years and who is not married, engaged or in a common-law relationship ($150)

...I am only 21. And also pregnant with our son, I am not sure if he even has anything to do with this application due to my husband being a citizen of Canada? Would he need to sponsor him too? I will be heading back to the states for the next few months (delivery there is a lot cheaper for me...and I'm due September 10 so better safe than sorry) so I have no clue if him being born in the states means he'll be a dependent of me? or...nevermind, I don't want to get ahead of myself.

We just need to know which category I fall under for those fees, and do we pay his portion first, then after approval/denial pay for the other portion? Or do all fees and the whole application get submitted at the same time?

Congratulations on your soon-to-be `little one'!

Ok...even though you are only 21, you are being sponsored by your husband, as his spouse, so you are the Principal Applicant.

Depending on how you and your husband obtained your own citizenship, your child may have both American and Canadian citizenship.

Typically, all fees are paid up front ($1040 total), but you can defer the RPRF ($490) until the end of the process...even though it may add a slight delay to you landing.

Good luck!

i can tell you from experience as a US outland applicant, waiting to pay the RPRF until it's requested did not delay my processing. i paid it and got decision made in less than 2 weeks!

Thanks! So excited! :D :D

So my portion will be $475?

And Husband's Canadian citizenship and my American one were obtained by just where we were born...wait so they'll request my portion AFTER his approval?

Or am I missing something...what is RPRF?

i have no idea what that sentance means. BOTH the principle applicant fee AND the sponsor fee MUST be paid upfront in order for the application to be complete and begin processing. Both applications get mailed together in the same package and go to Mississauga. Once the sponsor is approved, they will forward it to the visa office for the applicant processing.

that is the right of permanent residency fee. it must be paid in order to receive pr approval, and does not need to be paid upfront like the other fees. they will request it before they issue the pr visa.

ohhh ok! Welp, looks like we better start filling out this application. It looks pretty intimidating...don't be surprised if I'm back with more questions! haha
