I am currently in the process of getting my work permit extended through my LMIA. My work permit is expiring in Sep 2025. I am still a little confused about the whole process. According to my lawyer, Lmia's work permit can give me an extension of 3 years, however, thinking on the odd side, what happens if my work permit extension application gets rejected after the expiration date? Should I leave Canada in that situation?

And by lawyer, do you mean an immigration consultant? There's been so many changes in the last few months in the TFW immigration it's better to go through the IRCC website and find out what applies to your scenario. Better to do your own research before paying any money.
In the event, your work permit extension gets refused, you have the option to restore your status within 90 days from refusal as a visitor (visitor record) or a worker. However, you will not be able to work during that period until your worker status is restored with an approved work permit! If you take the visitor record route, then you will not be able to work under that as well! The visitor record will simply allow you to remain in Canada till the mentioned date in your approved visitor record!
