I found this forum really helpful in the past and was hoping someone could clear something up for me.
My wife and I will be applying for her PR soon (inland spousal), but my wife would like to go home for a week to visit her friends and family. Does leaving the country invalidate the application?
CIC says its not a problem:
cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?q=248&t=28
But I've found sites like these that say it is a problem:
matthewiwama.com/video/part-3-sponsorship-series-inland-vs-outland/
While coming back into the country she would be assessed and could potentially be turned away as that's the case any time you cross the border as a non resident/citizen, but does leaving the country put her PR application at risk?
Ideally she should remain in Canada if she is applying inland. If she leave the country ans is refused reenter - this will effectively cancel her application.
If she is visa exempt to Canada or has a multiple entry TRV, it's not that risky. If she was however in the situation that she would need to apply for a new TRV before returning, odds are that she would be denied based on her PR application proving that she is wanting to remain in Canada permanently and that would cancel her application.
If she succeeds in making the trip and is able to return, there is no problem with the application. For inland, she must be residing in Canada so a longer trip could be risky but a week or two should be fine.
