In the last six months I have had a stroke, surgery for neck cancer, radiotherapy and surgery for a broken ankle. We even had doctors' requests written to ask for the TRV to be granted so that my wife could help me on my road to recovery as I return to live in Canada. I can only hope the TRV is granted and I can do what I can for our family once in Canada. My wife is now crying and wondering why I didn't go TRV and then inland application initially. I feel like an idiot, but I definitely was told at immigration Canada visa office in Bangkok that the Singapore office was around 8 months to a year...hence my strategy.
So lets look at it this way. You have had a stroke of bad luck in the recent months but there is no reason why it shouldn't change right now. Be optimistic and hope for the best, yet prepare for the worst but with immigration, there is never really much you can do except wait your turn and deal with things as they come along. Hopefully you will get your TRV and go from there. Once you are in Canada, you can apply inland and if your wife finds an employer who is ready to do an LMO for her, she can apply for a work permit even before the first stage approval and open work permit which should take 6 months but might take longer according to Scylla. I wish you the best of luck.
