I am not discouraging anyone from staying there oh as i was only talking about the ills of that area to child development not for adults. How was your sight seeing trip?

You talk as if you have been in Canada or lived in Brampton for years. I am sure that today is your first time of ever getting to Brampton. You need informed opinion about people living in a place and accurate statistics b4 jumping to conclusion about an area. Crimes abound everywhere even in Ottawa the seat of power but the crime rates in Brampton is quite minimal and not compared to what is happening in Toronto. I have lived in Brampton now for 7 months and i can say it authoritatively that the crime rates here is damn too low. If you are talking about Brampton how about Jane and Finch or Shepperd and Finch in Toronto That constantly have records on a daily basis.

If i cannot talk much about other areas i can say it boldly that i know Brampton very well. I am the outgoing type and i have friends all over through my networking and i can give you what is peculiar to each area in the cities of Brampton, Mississauga and Toronto. I challenge you to prove to me what you mean by ills of the area to child development. Have you ever trained, developed or raised a child in Brampton b4. pls be exact in your approach to issues and not just talk to impress.

I am not defending Brampton but i believe that records should be put straight accordingly and living in any area is individual choice.

Though Indians abound here but it is a plus for us cos i always prove to them that i am better placed than them and this i have shown in several places that i met with them. About Naija in Brampton, They are minimal compared to Toronto where i have lots of friends with lots of Naija community meetings/associations.

Brampton is a good area to live and raise a family. 10 years ago, Nigerians living in Brampton was very uncommon but now, its quite popular. Most Nigerians who I know that live in brampton have a home there. I mean, they have bought a house in brampton. Yes, there are a lot of indians there. But I dont think they negatively affect the social life in brampton, I think its a plus.

Jane and Finch is a very popular Nigerian area and it has been for a very long period of time. I can say if anywhere will be called the ghetto of toronto, it will be called Jane and Finch. Hence, there is more crime in this area, more deviant and more negative neighbourhood effect on child development.

So, in conclusion, I will encourage anyone to live in brampton, and raise a child there, the nigerian population there is growning. The growing population of nigerians and indians there are not criminally oriented or deviant.

Like brampton, another good location is mississauga. If you are like the high life kind of person, you like to have fun, you dont have children, you are short of money, you like to be close to everything Nigerian, you want to be able to walk to the lobby of your appartment and meet a Nigerian, then Jane and finch may be the best place for you.

I must also say, when I say somewhere is a getto of Canada, I dont mean that it is in the same way as the US. Canada is a lot more peacefull than the US. What will be called a ghetto in Canada will probably be an almost normal neighbourhood in the US.

i have heard it coutless times that we should be ready to do any kind of jobs in the 1st few months of arriving until we able to get fully certified or schooled in our area of specialisation..my question?

1, what type of menial jobs are readily available?
2, what is its worth
3, can you throw more light on rentage (basement, 2 bedroom aprtment etc) in the different cities you have knowledge of.

You don't even behave like someone that lived in Lagos before embarking on a flight to Canada. Pleeeeeeeeeease show some respect to Nigeria and people here. We are generally not like you and the whole world knows that. Go through this thread and our mother thread and you will see that we are generally helpful and respectful of each other. Don't bring a foul joke/comment our way.


Life is equal right o. Did you live in Ikoyi before you left Nigeria? And I am sure the immigration people didn't notice either!

Rate range from $500 -$900/month. 2 bedroom apartment $1000-$1300/month. I believe location is a personal thing. My advise, get there and decide.

Yes, I agree with Barsindoo.

Menial jobs includes working with people with developmental disabilitites (after getting CPR and first aid training and other training), working as security officer (after getting like 5 days or so training), grocery store, factory, fast food. I have heard that if you are able to take the training, security officer may pay more. Note that you can not use the CV style from Nigeria. There are lots of things that are on Nigerian CV that are illegal for employers to know before they hire you, e.g. your age, your marital status, nos of children etc. So, I suggest when you arrive in Canada, look for an employment resource centre to polish your CV. There are many around Canada.

Worth: Yes, Barsindoo is right $10-$11 per hour (most likely 10)

Rent: Basement bachelor $500-$650, Basement 1 bedroom $600 - $750, Basement 2 bedroom $700 to $900. The price may fluctuate either lower or higher based on if the basement has a seperate entrace (or if you have to go through the entrace of the people above), the basement has windows (how many and how big), the location, and how much below ground it is. Note that this is for toronto. If you are planning to live outside of toronto, it will most likely be cheaper. When I say toronto, I include mississauga and brampton. For example, if you are planning to live in a place like Chatham, you can get a one bedroom apartment (not basement) for $600.

The other thing is subsidized housing. There are some housing that you apply for and the amount you pay are based on your income and they also consider your family size. But of course, you cannot get this until after you are in Canada. Some people can live in subsidized housing and be paying only $300 for a one bedroom apartment. The wait time to get this type of housing is long, you may be lucky and get it in 3 months or you may still be waiting after 1.5 years. I have heard that subsidized housing may be easier to get in some cities than others. Women with children will find it easier to get than men. I am not sure at what point new immigrants are eligible for subsidized housing. Unfortunately, this is all I know about this form of housing. Other people who live in canada already may want to contribute.

Yes, basement is often colder. However, you can buy a heater for around $25- $50 to use in the basement.

Two websites to find homes
www.viewit.ca I recommend this, but most of the homes are apartment buildings.

Another is www.craigslist.ca. For craigslist, I advice you just go there to look at price range but dont rent from there. When I was looking for apartment I met dubious people 3 times on it. I only knew because I lived in toronto but someone from abroad (nigeria) it would be hard to recognize scams.
