i am looking to fly to canada via london,as its the cheapest route.i am concerned about the requirements of a transit visa.

you don't need any transit visa for travelling through UK unless you want to come out from the airport. I'm not sure about USA but as my knowledge you need USA visitor visa for travel through USA.
