Indian passport surrender

Not really and SC or OCI topic but folks in ON please make sure you get your immigration status updated on the OHIP by visiting Service Ontario location.
Take your original Citizenship Certificate, OHIP card and Driver's License (or any other proof like Photo ID or the Canadian Passport).
There is no fee involved and you do not need to fill out the form.
One parent can do that for their children as well under 16. You cannot do it on behalf of your spouse.

Curious to understand why we need to update? Is there a difference in treatment for citizens compared to other categories.

No difference as such when I got the ohip renewed at Service Ontario my immigration status in their system reflects as Permanent Resident, which is what I changed. Since it’s not an urgent topic you can do that (should you choose to) upon your ohip renewal

If you status in the US along with an address proof like DL or utility bill etc, you can apply via VFS (not BLS) in the US

09-Jun-2023: Postal application sent
12-Jun-2023: Received at BLS
14-Jun-2023: In Process at Consulate
20-Jun-2023: Certificate granted
26-Jun-2023: Certificate printed
27-Jun-2023: On way to BLS; Dispatched
28-Jun-2023: Certificate received

Yes it’s not the passport you are surrendering it’s the nationality by letting them know that you have acquired some other nationality.

That’s why it is absolutely necessary step.
