I have a query regarding importing my car into Canada for a two year work permit (temporary stay by definition).

I have a 2 year work permit and am currently waiting on TRV to travel to Canada and bring my car (along with some other belongings) along. The car is less than 5 years old and as such would require processing at border.

Can someone please help me with information on what I need to do? Primarily I have these questions and concerns:

1. I own the car (Title in my name, no lien). Will I need to import it, even though it is temporary stay.
2. Will I have to pay duty or something? When people immigrate, I understand they get a waiver for duty for personal stuff and car, what about me?
3. Should I surrender my NY number plates before I leave or should I send them back after I am in Canada
4. Will I be able to register the car locally (in Canada) and get local plates?
5. If after a year of working there, I apply for Permanent Residence (either through employer or CEC), will I have to import the car then? how will it work?

Thanks a bunch for your advice

1. As your work permit is for less than 3 years, you don't have to import the car. CBSA will give you a temporary admission for the vehicle for the length of your TWP.
