Speed is not mentioned in question...as per sentence, optimization without mentioning speed is irrelevant... therefore, speed fits in well..

The extinction of Moa birds was due to humans hunting them for proteins.. so Humans is the answer I think

Regarding the "what does speaker think of Paul's experiments".. I think the answer is something like "hope/almost it is true". I don't think it is "certainly true" as she starts in a very +ve note about the experiments, but ends it something like.. "lets get the results to close the matter once and for all". So, she sounds very +ve about it but she want Paul to confirm it.
