IEC about to expire and want to Stay in Canada , Advice???

I am currently working in canada under then IEC one year work and travel permit. My work permit runs out on 15th September, but I want to stay and travel for a few more months( not working) Can anyone give me any advice on how I should go about this ? DO i need to send off an application to change my status or can i just stop working??

I am interested in applying for this program in December 2012.
