I am a Canadian citizen by birth, living in China with my wife, and submitted my sponsorship application to Mississauga on 2 November. One form asked me for proof of birth, and I provided my Canadian passport. But now that I think about it carefully, I realize that I should have submitted ny birth certificate, because only a citizen by birth may sponsor a Chinese wife while living outside Canada, not a naturalized citizen.

EVen though I listed my place of birth as Ottawa, Canada, only a birth certificate proves this, not my passport.

So now what do I do? I cannot contact Mississauga, because their system does not yet show my application. Should I call them and explain the situation? Or will they email me for the birth certificate if they insist on it?

I would do the former. Call them and ask them to add your birth certificate to the package. This might slightly delay the process, since they'll take the package from the pile and then put it back on top. However, make sure to ask the CIC person on the phone first. I got a similar scare a few weeks ago, but as it turned out, my worries were unfounded.

Best of luck!

Re: I provided a passport copy, not a birth certificate

I just tried to call CIC, but their 1-888-242-2100 number doesn;t work when called from outside Canada.

Does anyone have a number that works from outside Canada? ANy number at all -- I use a VOIP program, so the calls are cheap.

No no no NO! That is NOT correct. You do NOT need to be a Canadian citizen by birth to be able to sponsor while living outside of Canada, you just need to be a Canadian citizen, period. Please go back and read the instructions!!!! The sponsor is required to submit:

a. PR card or COPR , OR
b. Canadian citizenship card, OR
c. Canadian citizen certificate, OR
d. Canadian birth certificate, Or
e. Canadian passport

You can ONLY get a Canadian passport if you are a Canadian citizen. Stop overcomplicating things. Submitting a copy of your passport is fine.

Well that's a relief. Thanks.

we sent just a copy of passport and that was enough for them.
good luck.
