Hello!
We applied for sponsorship (spouse) 1 week before my visa expired. My questions are:
1.- What happen if I haven't received any letter from immigration? I know they received the package with my application, but am I under implied status? Do I have to apply for a visa extension?
2.- How long takes for immigration to send a letter or email with the application number? I haven't received anything from them. I sent my application by mail 2 weeks ago.
Thank you!

1. will advice you apply for visitor visa extension....to remain in status....if for whatever reason your application is returned and needs to be resubmitted.....note: your inland sponsorship will be processed status or out-of-status.....but if you apply for OWP, it will not be approved if as at the time the complete application was received you were out-of-status.
2. AOR sometimes takes around 3 to 4 months.....assume 12 months to complete sponsorship processing.

If you applied inland and applied for a work permit, then that work permit application gives you implied status. Provided everything is okay with it and it doesn't get returned (most common reason: people pay $155 instead of $255), you will remain on implied status and get your work permit in a few months. If the work permit application gets returned due to wrong fees, missing signatures and the like, you will be out of status. Being out of status doesn't prevent you from completing the PR process, but you can't reapply for the work permit without status.
AOR usually takes about 6 weeks, but we have seen it come earlier and later as well (recently there's been some delays, so some people got them up to three months after sending in the application). Either way, it's definitely too early for you to get it.
