Help! Question on study permit

I am going to Canada for a four-year Ph.D program starting fall this year. I heard that usually upon arrival, the immigration officer will issue you a study permit which has the same length as the program length. In other words, the study permit should be valid for four years in my case. However, my passport will expire in the fall of 2011 (I cannot renew my passport until spring 2011), which is only three years from the date I begin my Ph.D study.

So for my case, what is the valid length of the study permit they will grant me when I arrive? Will it be four years(whole program length), three years (that is, until the date my passport expires), or only one year?

Please advice if you know the answer. Thank you all!

The longest will be to the expiry of your passport. They may issue for a year, depending on your available funds.

Hello PMM, Appreciate your answer! The offer letter from the school says clearly that I will be fully funded by the school throughout the four years of my study (tuition plus living expense). With this fact, do you think they will give me a valid study permit to the expiry of my passport?

Probably they will, but there are never any guarantees.

No worries! even if they give you study permit until your passport expires, you come in Canada, study for that period of time, then renew your passport, then apply for extension of your study permit. There will be no problem as you have clear funding source. The only thing to lose is the study permit application fee!
