My husband (US citizen) was issued a 6-month visitor record that will expire on January 23. He gathered everything together to apply for an extension in early December, and decided to try his luck applying at the port of entry (land crossing at Pacific Highway in BC) instead of mailing the application to Vegreville. The IO at the port of entry started processing the extension but after consulting with his supervisor, he told my husband he did not need the extension because he would be landing in BC within the month. We were obviously very happy with this news at the time but it is now January and we have not heard anything regarding my husband's PR application, which began processing in Buffalo on November 19.
I am getting very worried that his visitor record will expire before his PR application is approved. Since the IO told him he did not need to apply for the extension since he would be landing within the month, we are now past the 30-day deadline to submit the extension request. Any advice on what we should do?
Of course they are, they have access to CAIPS/FOSS/GCMS The OP is they are worried should just apply for an extension on line, as long as it is before the expiry date.
If the border agent accepts it, yes. If they apply for an extension they can try that and if it doesn't work out, try to re-enter again. So applying for an extension gives you an extra chance, plus implied status while you wait.

will it work if they just cross the border to the US and back?
