I am a French citizen living in Canada with a PR. My life partner is a Lebanese citizen, living in Lebanon. We have been together for the past 10 years but in a long-distance relationship for the past 3 years. We have decided to get married. As we envision ourselves living in Canada, I was wondering if it would make more sense to get married in Canada. As my life partner is not a resident, can we get married in Canada? Or do we have to get married first in France and then go through a family sponsorship? Can we get married in both countries? What would make more sense to ease our immigration?
There's no residency requirement to get married in Canada, anyone there can do it. You can't get married in both (you can have ceremonies in both, but only the first legal ceremony will be valid), so whichever is easiest for you to both get to of France or Canada is best. Once you are legally married somewhere, you can sponsor them through family class (although you will have to be in Canada all the time, as a PR - only citizens can sponsor when they are overseas).
