You can check the SS for the timelines... As per visa issuance, it only took 6 months since I passed my application to Nova Scotia until the visa was issued.

I wanted to ask what is the last date when you visa gets expire. what is the time period of the visa before you have to go to Canada. is it 1 year or less

It's one year from the date your Medicals are done. Say you completed your medicals on X date and send your results+other docs to VO and VO took 3 months to issue you Visa. So you are left with 9 months (1 years - 3 months) to land in Canada.
