Je suis affamé - I am hungry (adjective). while "faim- hunger (noun)" J'ai faim - is the form. And you should bare in mind that foreign languages should not be traslated word by word but you have to lear the forms that are used in the foreign language and translate it to the equivalent form that is used in your native language.
