Hi

I am going to file my tax returns soon, as a married woman for the first time.
My husband is not in canada yet, so how will this work?

We sent his application and it arrived Dec 7th in Mississauga ON and is in process with Mexico.

Thanks!

You must inform CRA of your change in status or changing it in myaccount.
You file your taxes as married, provide his name and his income in CAD (even if it's not taxable in Canada)
You can claim the spousal amount on Line 303 of Schedule 1 for a non-resident spouse, IF your spouse depends on you for support and his net income is low enough.

I have informed them i am married since i got married last year.
I am not sure how i can get his income info from last year though, he is in the Dom Rep! And is it the
Whole year or from the time we got married? That will difficult to get i think...

He does not depend on me much for support
We pay half half on a bike we got together
Thats it
He takes care of himself otherwise, his house etc

Anyone knows how i can get his income from the Dom Rep?

Just make an estimate based on his monthly salary.

This will be very useful for you

Non-Resident Spouse, Child or Grandchild of an Individual Resident in Canada

Thanks
I read the info and i do not think anything applies to me at all
I am confused by it all

And how can i know the cost of living over there? :(
nd also do i get an estimate only for the time were got married on or
The whole year?

^whole year, ask him whats his monthly salary then times 12 then convert to cad, google whats the exchange rate for today, it's just an estimate, cra won't tax him.

If you do not support your husband, then don't claim the spousal amount. write his sin as 000-000-000 and all will be good.

He did not work the whole 12 months and his previous job paid differently than now.

You can write an approximate total for it. It will have consequences on benefit calculations. But you will need no forms for him as you will not claim that you support him, and he is not in Canada and will not interact with CRA himself.

Will this mean i will get penalize or pay more taxes?
If i had known i would have made things differently
