I'm an American in Canada and overstayed my visitor limit by 4 months, going on 5..if my gf sponsors me outland for common law, and then I apply for an extension so that I can travel back and forth more reliably..what are the chances they will grant me an extension at this point? I know it's seperate from the common law, so I'm thinking they may not grant the extension since I already overstayed by 4 months. Thanks in advance for all your help.
You can only apply for an extension to your visitor status if your visit is still legal. Since you have overstayed for several months, you do not qualify for an extension.
Even if you did qualify for an extension, an extension would not allow you to travel in and out of the country freely. Extensions are for extending your stay in Canada only. As soon as you leave, the extension is canceled.

Thanks Scylla, But applying for common law would not be a good enough reason to be granted an extension to stay, if I state that's the reason on the app?
