My wife and I have been married for 11 years, all of that time residing in the US (she is US citizen, I'm Canadian). We, along with our child moved to Canada in July. At the border we explained our intention to apply for PR status and they gave us a visitor visa for 6-months. We are waiting for a police report to arrive any day now, but then we're ready to send off the application. We were planning on an inland application so that she could get an open work permit. However, with the latest 16-month estimate for inland application stage 1 approval, it now seems abundantly clear that outland is the way to go. My question is this: how do we extend the visitor status for her? Are there any risks in doing so?
good choice on switching to outland, since that is the ONLY way current us applicants should even think about applying. US applicants with straightforward cases are seeing approvals in about 6 months.
to extend her stay as a visitor, it is pretty simple. you will need to go to the CIC website and apply to extend her stay. it costs $100 and PR applicants are rarely denied. it is quite typical for pr applicants to ask for 12+ months and get approved, so it's best to ask for more than less.
I can't tell you exactly where to go on the website, though i'm sure someone will be around to post the link. i'm also sure doing a quick google search or a search on the CIC website will point you in the right direction.
30-12-2014 , then again 13-02-2015 (DM 03-01-2015, PP&CoPR received 06-01-2015, returned to Ottawa because of a mistake, received again on 16-02-2015)
