Exporting/Importing a car

My husband got his Canada PR status, and now we need to bring the car across from the USA to Canada.
We went into the Canada border and they gave us a number to the American border. Apparently we need to export it 3 days before we import it??
My husband is going to talk to the american border on Tuesday. We are confused because the internet does not give instructions, who to contact, and the process.
Can someone please tell me. Step by step, and where to go, and who to talk to, from the export to the import. Thank you
