Expired PR card options for flying or driving back to Canada?

I thought my husbands card had 2 years left on it but it is expired. We have a trip to fly out of Canada to the USA this weekend.

Any advice of what we should do?He will renew tomorrow so we will have a receipt to show that but will he be able to board a plane to come back to Canada? Or would it be better for us to drive across?

No he won’t be able to board a plane. He will need to drive across a land border in a private car.

Thank you for your reply. What documents should we bring with us to drive back across?

We have sent the renewal in today should I bring a copy or proof that it was paid and mailed? We have his original landed immigrant paper from 1970 to bring. Should we bring tax returns etc?
