EI Application

Hey guys, got a question, I'm here on a work permit with my wife and son; they have open work permit and open study permit, however mine is tied to a specific company. I just got laid off for shortage of work. Can I apply for EI Insurance? If I do how is that going to affect my status here. I do want to apply for permanent residency, how is that going to be affected as well? Thanks
