I am a dentist in Canada. Although there are many dentists now as compared to 15 years ago, there are still lot of opportunities. Population is growing fast due to immigration and dentists are always needed. If you are skillful and do good dentistry, you will not have any difficulty finding job even in major centers like GTA. The new Canadian graduates have hard time finding job as they need experience and need to grow skills before the get good jobs.
I went to dental school in North America, I didn’t have any difficulty finding a job. Banks are very generous and they often give you million dollars to either start a new practice or to acquire an existing one just based on your license.
You can easily make 180k-200k a year working 4.5 to 5 days a week. You will have to work weekends if you want to settle in Major centers like GTA or Vancouver and have to be able to perform some advanced procedures, due to competition, if you don’t want to work weekends you can settle in smaller towns.
I worked in US as well, you make more money in US and keep more money as well because taxes are low, houses, gas groceries, internet, leisure, travel, insurances are way way cheaper in US.
Start your practice as soon as you can as you can pay very minimum tax as business owner, keep most of your income in your business. Most business owner dentists pay 15 to 20% tax. And when you retire and sell your practice, you get very large cap gain exemption in taxes.
Although there are many dentists in Canada but most of them are making good living. Some keep on complaining because they always want someone or something to blame. Just have the right skills and treat e everyone like you would treat your family and you will do great.
