Hello everyone, I really need your quick advice regarding this problem, We just got married one month ago in the Philippines and now I'm starting gathering and completing my requirements needed for my spousal sponsorship. And now here is my question, do i need to change my marital status from single to married since i'm married already a month ago ? if so, then i should get a new passport using my husband's surname and also with the other documents? or should i still use my maiden name and remain single even if i'm married already, would that be a big issue if i don't change it or should i change my status as soon as i get to canada? would that be a cause of problem for my visa application? please Ur advice is highly appreciated. Thank you a lot.
It's not mandatory to take your husbands last name. Many women keep their maiden name their entire lives during marriage. This doesn't mean you're single. So again if you're married then you can't "remain single" and must state you are married in any forms that ask... no matter what last name you have.
Thanks Rob for Ur quick response, I was just a bit confused cos i had a friend and she said i need to change my status go attend the cfo seminar to change my status and if i will do that i should get a new passport and other requirements like nbi using my husband's surname, and so i was worried and really need for an expert advice regarding this matter. So i think i should go ahead and continue processing my papers using my surname instead of changing everything if i will change my status. Thanks Rob I really appreciate your time and help. God bless.
Some here have experienced varying degrees of frustration attempting to have this done before submitting their application, I hope 'Dan_from_Surrey' chimes in. It delayed their submitting their application almost a whole year. We had no difficulty with all of the name change stuff, but personally I wouldn't delay. Gather all of your documents, proofs, complete the forms and get it sent it. It won't matter that many of those required docs still have your maiden name on it.
Again, your "status" is married. This is the only "status" you have right now, so there should be no question on "if" you change your status.
Your last name has absolutely nothing to do with your marital status. Your status changed the second you got married.
In general, it's probably better for any PR applicant to just keep their maiden name and not look to change it until the PR process is completely finished. I can only imagine the headaches that it could cause trying to change a last name and all the documents that could be affected, right in the middle of the application being processed.
Oh i see, i got the sense of it, Thanks a lot Rob and true smile for your very helpful response with my concern. I do really appreciate your time and effort responding my questions.. I hope ths application won't take so long. Thanks so much and God bless you All.
