Customs/Immigration stamp in Passport

Hi
When I go to Australia, Often, I go via Montreal from France,
In Montreal, I take the In Transit line for Immigration control, for the flight
Montreal, Vancouver,, Usually I stay over for a week or 2 weeks visiting friends, before going on to Sydney from Vancouver.
When I go through the Customs control, the Officer stamps my passport with a red stamp.
What does the red stamp signify in terms of stay in Canada, if any,? as I would be on going..

usually you're given 6 months stay.. all my stamps are red too and that means i got 6 months. unless they write a different date underneath the stamp.
