Hi everyone,
I'm applying for residency from within Canada; my common law partner who's a Canadian citizen will be sponsoring me.
Couple questions hopefully someone can help me with...
1. What is the actual definition of a dependant? My partner and I don't have any children but are we technically each others' dependants?
2. Depending on q.1's answer - does my common law partner then count as a dependant on the generic application form if he's the one sponsoring me? Or would it only be if you have a common-law partner but they're not the person sponsoring you?

1. for reasons of the application, a dependant is a child or parent (if you are legally & financially responsible for them). so, no your spouse isn't your dependant. he is the sponsor, he's not going to be included in the application as a dependant.
2. a) no. he is your sponsor. b)i don't think so. if both spouses were being sponsored by a third person, they would both be applicants. 1 person would be the principle applicant and the other would be the "spouse". i don't think either person would be classified as a dependant. the fact you support eachother financially doesn't legally make you eachother's "dependant".
