Can i sponsor my common law partner even if i owe the canadian govt a few thousand in income taxes from 2016? is it futile to apply before paying it off? thanks for any info
Thanks for the reply. It's just I saw a YouTube video saying to send the last 2 tax returns with the application to show the govt you don't owe them money. They then said you can't sponsor if you owe them. I'm hoping they're misinformed. They are immigration consultants though. The channel is North Horizon immigration consulting

I would ignore any immigration advice on youtube. Too many people who don't know what they are talking about or trying to make the process sound really complicated so that you hire them to help you. You don't need a consultant to go through this process. Most of here have done it on our own.
Owing money to CRA isn't listed as a reason that prevents someone from sponsoring. Being on social assistance prevents sponsorship and so does being bankrupt - but not owing tax money.
Oh I've been able to pay it. I just preferred having it in my UK bank in case of emergency out here, rather than in the hands of the incompetent govt. Once I return I'll be sorting that debt out.

Indirectly it does become an issue. Although there is not a minimum income to support your spouse you have to show you can support your spouse. If you have income tax debts that CIC can see that will likely cause concern. Not the end. of the world if you can find a family members in Canada willing to support you and give their financial information.
Good to know. I'll be including proof of job offer and copies of our bank statements with what I hope to be more than sufficient funds. I'll get ahold of family too as you suggest, thanks
