When i went to write my test there were couple of over 55 and yes they was interviewed not necessarily to access their language ability more to assess their presence in Canada passport checks etc etc
When I took my test, same thing. They asked who is over 54 and pulled them out of the group and brought them to interview with the judge before the test. Seeing it from a far, it looked more like a friendly chat than a 3rd degree interrogation
