Citizenship application of child who is not in Canada but has PR

The other poster asked about applying for the kids' citizenship when the parent is already a citizen, so you aren't go through the same thing.

You were provided wrong information. Your child doesn't need to have 730 days in Canada first.

Do you have any link so I can point this out to IRCC call Center that this is wrong information? I so hope this to be wrong too .

sorry to ask as this might be personal, when did ur daughter become PR? and how many days left for her to meet the eligibility?

my kids are not PR yet, but hopefully will be as their application is in process, so when they become PR, they have 5 years to fulfill the 730 days rule, and they have a valid PR,

so when i apply for their citizenship with newly acquired PR , will they be required to first fulfil the PR status then apply? ie. stay for 2 years then apply for citizenship

So they cannot renew their PR cards once their cards expire, and will likely lose the status . I will then have to reapply for them.

To continue my previous reply, my daughter and I will also go through the same process as you and your child will go through. After parents becoming citizens , but children are still PRs.

Exactly .. that was the reason they asked in the minor application of the child asking if the child was out of country for how long etc . Even though they do not require the minors to fulfill this “1095 days” requirement to be eligible for citizenship, they do require minors to maintain permanent residency obligation which is 730 days. You can also call the call Center agents and ask. Most might not know, but they will ask their supervisor and find out for you.

by the way,

i just remembered that if ur PR card expires soon and u cant meet the PR OR, that doesnt mean u lose PR status,

PR status is different than PR card.

i believe PR can stil enter canada even if the pr card is expired, u have to get a temporarily travel document.

Why did all of them give me wrong information then ? You know I actually contacted a lawyer regarding this before asking the agents and officer. The lawyer was not sure too. I’m not going to mention the name since we are on the site . I even have proof of emails

Yes you’re right. PR card doesn’t mean PR status . But in their case, they will lose PR status and won’t be able to renew because they didn’t and won’t have lived here 730 days. For the moment, they live in the United States. My husband works in the US and my daughter still goes to school in the US. So if they both quit the job and school and come live here even though the card is expired , no problem for them .

But after their cards expire and if they want to enter Canada, I heard that they might need to give explanation within 60 days or something before they try take their status away. I don’t know exactly because they haven’t gone through yet. But they both have US passports also, so may be they can just come in with their US passports without showing their expired PR cards at all. We will find that out next year.

I am in Canada since last 6 year and became PR in Jan 2018 and PR is valid till Jan 2023. I will be eligible for Citizenship next Feb/March. So it is mandatory for my son to spend 730 days before citizenship application or I can apply his citizenship with me because his PR is valid till Jan 2023.
